Everyone learned a lot from Hurricane Katrina's impact on New Orleans. During any major disaster, emergency workers may not be able to get to you quickly, and it could take at least 3 days or longer for help to arrive. Each family must learn to be prepared for any type of disaster.

When the electricity and gas stops and no water or telephone service is available, having a plan for your family and all of their needs, will ensure that they come out on the other side of a difficult emergency situation safe and sound.

There are common sense items that you need to have on hand like Food and water. The quantity is based on the amount of people in your family. It doesn't stop there though. Having a 72 Hour SaverKit, with all of the recommended items of Ready America is a must for each family member. When a disaster strikes, there is no time to start shopping for all of the things you need. We have taken away all of the running around from you, and saved you time and gas money by picking out the best required items for you.

Being prepared keeps you calm and collected during a disaster because you have the proper supplies and a plan of action. You should have contact information for all of your local emergency responders, evacuation zones, maps, and a checklist of the many important steps to take in order to keep you and your family safe before, during and after a disaster.

Almost 40% of small businesses that close due to a disaster event never re-open. What would you do if the building your business is located within was damaged or destroyed in a disaster? Where would you go to continue providing your customers with your business services? Would you be prepared and have the correct resources, databases, contact information and other necessary items to adapt to these changes? Having a disaster plan that identifies these important items will help ensure your business is prepared to survive during unexpected and difficult times!

By being prepared, you will be a survivor. The best time to get ready is now, before any disaster is on the horizon. Start with a family meeting and a pen and paper. Start with the basics like a good Crank Powered NOAA Weather Radio. It's so important to stay informed during an emergency. Some of these come with LED lights that never need batteries and always work. That's another thing, get a good LED Flashlight. You don't have to worry about the bulb braking and not being able to see. The LED lights last for thousands of hours and they don't use much power.

A First Aid Kit isn't enough. You need a more advanced/professional kit that can handle the many different emergencies that can occur after a storm or disaster. Another important point to remember is that the Fire Rescue will not come out once the winds get past 40-50 MPH. You might have to be on your own a while. What would you do if a coconut came blasting through the window and gave your child a severe laceration on the arm? There is a life saving item called ActCel. It is a hemostatic gauze that controls bleeding. This gauze is put into the cut and pressure wrapped just like any other wound to control the bleeding until after the storm subsides. The gauze turns into sailane and dissolves over time, but keeps people alive long enough until professional help arrives. Having a good medical book with different emergencies is like having the bible handy.

Water is something each of us need to survive, but where and how much. They say a gallon a day per person, but that might not do it when extra family, friends or neighbors shows up. The new technology of today brings us MyWaterSafe products. That is a bladder that is made of thick plastic that fits neatly into any tub, and can be filled with 65 gallons of water to use for drinking, hygiene, or just flushing the toilet. It comes with a small pump to use when needed.

After The Storm - Think about it, after any bad storm, blizzard, tornado every spider, snake and poisonous creature is out and about. There are hidden dangers under the water with downed electrical lines, broken glass and other sharp objects. We all know that going out after a disaster isn't a good idea, but that never stopped us before. We want to see even if it kills us! Unless your life is at risk inside your home, stay put in your home and don't wander off. There are plenty of people who made it through a terrible storm only to kill them selves afterwards, when a branch loaded from an ice storm, lets loose and crushed them.

Pets - Don't forget about your pets. They give us the true meaning of love in every way. Have enough food, treats, and water for your pets. My dog is featured in our tool section and she doesn't need much to survive, but I have a pet emergency first aid kit along with a travel bag encase we have to evacuate. Know where the closest evacuation center is that accepts animals.

Gas - During Hurricane Season we always keep our gas tanks half filled. When you get down to a half a tank, refill again. When a Hurricane Watch is issued we keep them at three quarters of a tank full, and when a Hurricane Warning is issued we only have to top them off. See by having a plan, you set yourself up for a safe outcome.

Safety – Remember that one of the best ways to make your family safe is to be prepared before a disaster occurs. Take the time to do it right and start right now; it only takes 30 minutes to put your plan into action. Be ready, be a survivor.
